Falling Part I — Why Seasonal Change Increases Fall Risk

Winter falls are rarely just about snow or slippery surfaces. Reduced daylight, footwear changes, stiffness, and slowed reactions all increase fall risk. In Part I of this three-part series, we explore why winter exposes balance challenges, why near-falls matter, and how strength and preparation—not avoidance—help reduce risk.

Winter brings predictable changes underfoot. Ice, packed snow, slush, reduced daylight, bulky footwear, and colder temperatures all increase the likelihood of losing balance. But winter does not create fall risk on its own.

It reveals it.

This three-part series looks at winter falls from a practical, evidence-informed perspective. In Part I, we explore why falls are more common in winter and why they are rarely just “accidents.” In Part II, we’ll cover what falls and near-falls tell us, and when it’s appropriate to seek professional help. In Part III, we’ll focus on what actually helps reduce fall risk over time, including strength, balance, confidence, and the smart use of tools.

It’s Not Just the Snow — Why Falls Increase in Winter

Several winter-specific factors combine to challenge balance and stability, and slippery surfaces are only one part of the picture.

In winter, the environment changes how the body senses, reacts, and moves. Common contributors include:

  • Reduced traction from ice, packed snow, and slush

  • Footwear worn for warmth and traction that limits ankle motion and sensory feedback

  • Cold-related stiffness that can slow neuromuscular response, especially early in movement

  • Reduced daylight, glare, and low contrast that affect depth perception and visual input

  • Changes in movement behavior after a slip or scare

Each of these factors alone may be manageable. Together, they increase the demand on balance recovery systems that are often under-trained.

After a slip or near-fall, many people naturally become more cautious. Steps get shorter, movements become stiffer, and reactions slow. While understandable, this guarded strategy can actually increase fall risk by limiting the body’s ability to adapt quickly when balance is challenged.

Falls Are Usually Failed Recoveries, Not Big Slips

Slippery surfaces can certainly trigger a loss of balance, but most falls are not caused by the surface alone. They occur when the body is unable to recover once balance has been disrupted.

When a slip happens, the nervous system must respond quickly. Muscles need to generate force rapidly. The body must coordinate single-leg support, lateral control, and trunk stability, often all at once. When these systems are under prepared, a small perturbation becomes a fall.

Understanding falls as failed recoveries rather than simple accidents shifts the focus from avoidance to preparation. It also clarifies why strength, balance, and reaction training matter, and why, for some individuals, it is appropriate to seek professional support in addition to general fitness programming.

Near Falls Are an Early Warning Sign

Near falls deserve attention. Slipping but catching yourself, grabbing a railing, stumbling on uneven ground, or feeling momentarily out of control are all examples of near falls.

These events are not trivial. Research consistently shows that falls predict future falls, and near falls often precede them. Ignoring near falls is a missed opportunity to intervene early, before a more serious incident occurs.

Fear after a near fall can also change how people move. Activity decreases, uneven surfaces are avoided, and confidence erodes. Over time, this leads to further losses in strength, balance, and reaction speed, increasing fall risk rather than reducing it.

Why Avoidance Is Not the Answer

It is natural to want to be cautious in winter. However, avoiding movement, sticking only to flat predictable surfaces, or relying solely on footwear for safety does little to address the underlying contributors to falls.

Balance, strength, reaction speed, and confidence are all trainable qualities. Winter simply exposes whether these systems are being challenged enough throughout the year.

Preparation, not restriction, is what reduces risk.

Where Our Strength Programs Fits

Environmental tools such as over-the-shoe traction devices or walking poles can reduce risk during winter walks and hikes, but they work best when paired with training that improves the body’s ability to respond.
